Donald could do it if they hadn't committed so hard to him sounding like an AI built out of kazoos trained on actual duck noises. Mickey could never support a movie like this that asks us to consider him as a real man with tragedy and dimensions beyond cheerful and positive. Even some of the new characters like Pauly Shore's cheese obsessed weasel wear gloves, connecting him to classic animation's shameful past as an extension of minstrelsy. Any time two characters touch hands meaningfully it's impossible not to notice who is and isn't wearing gloves. Goofy gazing completely broken at the roadmap bathed in the hellish red of the glove compartment light, Goofy underlit by the tawdry Neptune hotel hot tub lights as he discusses the difficulties of being a single father with Pete, Goofy rising out of the mists of a waterfall, newly baptized in appreciation for the man his son is becoming. Several moments popped simply because of how beautifully composed they were, only to prominently feature Goofy of all people. Was very fun to watch with an audience laughing both at and with the movie. Rented out a whole theater and everything. ![]()
